Music And Gender

 When it comes to the music industry, I believe that there have been a lot of gender norms in a way that women have been more limited when it comes to expressing themselves with their music. In an article I found, called “Gender expectations in the Music Industry,” it gives a lot of good claims over this argument and goes more into detail using Madonna as an example. She received the Billboard's Woman of the year award and gave a speech with the claim of reality of the music industry. She states that she felt inspired by David Bowie because he “embodied male and female spirit and that suited me just fine.” Most times when males tend to let out a more feministic side of them, they might get criticized, but it’s always worse when women try to express themselves in a masculine way. The article brings up a great quote that says “Women in the music industry have been marketed by using sex and femininity for so long that when an artist doesn’t adhere to this, it’s hard to sell them.
