My name is Aiden Ayala and this is my freshman year here at Converse University. To start off as my go-to song I would say it’s “She’s Mine pt. 2” by J. Cole. Recently I have been really into him and I felt like I could listen to many of his songs on repeat. I’m also an athlete here as part of the Cross Country and Track team, so whenever I have to do workouts or runs on my own I like to keep myself entertained with music and as of right now I can say that J. Cole has been a top favorite, mainly because he has meaning behind his songs and I feel like some are relatable. To go back on the topic of athletics, one of the ways to get myself focused and try to be in a good mindset, I would definitely have to play J, Cole to get me in the great racing mood. I think anyone can always just catch themselves listening to at least one J. Cole song because he has had so many great hits whether it was back in his 2014 album or even his most recents.


For some more background information, my whole family is from Mexico and my grandparents have lived there their whole lives. We tend to go over in the summer or even in December during Christmas time to spend time with them. So as for my meaningful song I chose “Mi Razon De Ser'' by Banda MS because it will always remind me of my grandfather. This song ties very strong memories to someone who was one of the most important people in my life. I had a very close connection with my grandpa who lived in Mexico. I would love going to Mexico for the fact that I knew I would see him and everyone else in my family would feel the exact same way. Before he passed he would listen to this song all the time and it was his favorite for as far as I could remember. My family is very close and the loss of his death was very saddening for all of us, but at the end of the day I know that I made great memories with my grandpa and spent as much time as I could with him when I would go to Mexico. So without a doubt when I think of a meaningful song it will forever be this song.

As for a music genre that I don’t like, I would probably go with country music. I don’t like to say that I don’t like it for sure just because I know there have been a few songs that are catchy. I have also heard a few songs that have been country songs and I would listen to maybe for about a week max here and there, but they’re not anything that I would automatically think to ever put on. I also never really grew up listening to that genre of music to begin with, so I feel like it's reasonable to say that I would be least likely to enjoy it, merely for the fact that I was never really around it.

    I love J Cole, but I have to say Childish Gambino is better in my opinion. Regarding the genre that you don't like, I can agree with that. Country music is something I can never understand why people like it.

    J. Cole's album 2014 Forest Hill Drive is an awesome no skip album, so I certainly agree with you there. The inclusion of a Spanish song that ties into your family's heritage is also really cool. Lastly, a lot of country music is well written, but the example you put is definitely not my choice.

    Good Morning Aiden, I love how you are interested in the artist J.Cole , he is a great artist with a lot of great hits and also had a double platinum album with no features which is really impressive in the Hip-Hop industry.

    I think it's really neat that your whole family is from Mexico! I've never been there, but I do sometimes wonder what it's like there. I also find “Mi Razon De Ser'' to honestly be a nice song after I listened to it. It sounds like something that'd put you in a good mood, so I understand why your grandfather would love listening to it.

Music And Gender

 When it comes to the music industry, I believe that there have been a lot of gender norms in a way that women have been more limited when it comes to expressing themselves with their music. In an article I found, called “Gender expectations in the Music Industry,” it gives a lot of good claims over this argument and goes more into detail using Madonna as an example. She received the Billboard's Woman of the year award and gave a speech with the claim of reality of the music industry. She states that she felt inspired by David Bowie because he “embodied male and female spirit and that suited me just fine.” Most times when males tend to let out a more feministic side of them, they might get criticized, but it’s always worse when women try to express themselves in a masculine way.
