Music And Gender
When it comes to the music industry, I believe that there have been a lot of gender norms in a way that women have been more limited when it comes to expressing themselves with their music. In an article I found, called “Gender expectations in the Music Industry,” it gives a lot of good claims over this argument and goes more into detail using Madonna as an example. She received the Billboard's Woman of the year award and gave a speech with the claim of reality of the music industry. She states that she felt inspired by David Bowie because he “embodied male and female spirit and that suited me just fine.” Most times when males tend to let out a more feministic side of them, they might get criticized, but it’s always worse when women try to express themselves in a masculine way. The article brings up a great quote that says “Women in the music industry have been marketed by using sex and femininity for so long that when an artist doesn’t adhere to this, it’s hard to sell them. More male artists like Michael Jackson, Prince, and David Bowie have played with gender and “transvestism” than women.” That in specific made Madonna feel like it was harder to long stand gender norms in the music industry without receiving backlash from it. That quote itself also reminded me a lot of when Cardi B, a female rapper, released an inappropriate song. As a whole,we all know that The song WAP by Cardi B, is very explicit, but if i'm not mistaken, many males were calling her disgusting for it. I found another perfect article for this example and it is called “Men Hating On Cardi B’s Song ‘WAP’ Is Proof That The World Can’t Handle A Woman Expressing Her Sexuality.” This goes into detail and explains how many were saying that her and Megan The Stallion were “vulgar” and “a bad influence.” However, whenever male artists have dropped many explicit songs, they have never received this amount of hate. I know for a fact, because I listen to male artists that many of them say very vulgar things as well. 21 Savage, Lil Baby, J. Cole and Drake can all be examples of this behavior, but they receive nothing but good support from others, but as stated before, when female rappers have gone out to be more vulgar, they are called disgusting.
Hi Aiden, I found it very interesting that you used people in our culture today. I also found it amusing that you used the fact that males get away with their 'vulgar' words in their songs but women cannot. I also love Madonna and her music, it is very fun to dance and sing along to.
ReplyDeleteI thought that this video was really, interesting there was so much about Madonna that I didn't know. And even the "rules" for women in the music industry really hit hard because i never thought about those characteristics, however it is the case for many artists.
ReplyDeleteHi Aiden, I loved your blog post. I feel like you were very honest and accurate with everything you said. I agree about the point you made about how men get away with using "vulgar" language but when a woman does it is not allowed. Similar to Lizzie and I also love Madonna and her music.
ReplyDeleteHi Aiden, I agree with you. Women are definitely treated differently/more limited than men when they try to express themselves with music. I loved the video and I thought it was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI like your take on women's issues in the music industry, specifically because it is a male viewpoints. I think discussions like this are really important and having a point of view from someone outside of the range of the discussion (women in music) helps put it in perspective. Thank you!
